KUSA - Two years ago a new sport was added at the University of Colorado. On Thursday, the team will finally play their first game in Florida against Stetson.

CU Women's Lacrosse coach Ann Elliott knows a few things about scoring goals. She won three NCAA championships as a player at Northwestern. Now she's in charge of a brand new program in Boulder.

"For us to be able to build a program here at Colorado from the ground up," says Ann. "We have 23 players that have been waiting to play on Thursday for the few months, which is really exciting. We have a lot of energy going into it and we're just really looking forward to going out and competing for the first time and seeing what we can do against a great opponent like Stetson."

They do have a lot of energy, how could they not with 21 Freshman and 2 sophomores? The young team is more than ready to launch CU's 17th sport and let Buffs fans know they exist.

"Everyone is just getting to know that we have a D1 program," says freshman Midfielder Marie Moore. "It's exciting, you get to tell everyone on campus that it's new and I think there are going to be posters around and a lot of stuff getting out there. We were just announced at the basketball game, so I think just getting out there and getting publicity and stuff.. everyone's really excited."

Women's Lacrosse in Boulder is not a club sport. When they play their first game at Folsom Field on February 22nd, the gals plan to leave fans with a memorable experience.

"If you haven't seen lacrosse, it's one of the fastest sports on two feet, it's exciting." says Coach Elliott. "There's a lot of action offensively, defensively and there's usually a lot of goals, so it's going to keep you entertained. To come out and support us, we would love it, and we're hoping to get as many people from the Colorado area out here to our games and the kids are excited about the opportunity to play in front of them."
