Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Brandon Young scored 20 points and dished out
five assists to lead the DePaul Blue Demons to a 91-59 rout of the UC
Riverside Highlanders in the season opener at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
Cleveland Melvin added 16 points and tied for a team-high with seven
rebounds for DePaul (1-0). Derrell Robertson also collected seven boards.
Josh Fox paced UC Riverside (0-1) with 17 points while Austin Quick had 15.
Chris Patton led the Highlanders on the boards with nine.
After shooting 46.9 percent from the floor in the first half DePaul led
39-28 at the break. UC Riverside shot just 37.9 percent in the first period
and was outscored 18-3 from beyond the arc.
The Blue Demons really separated themselves in the second half by connecting
on 51.2 percent of its shot attempts including an impressive 5-of-7 from
three point range. The Highlanders improved to 45.5 percent shooting but had
less than half as many field goals as DePaul in the second half (21-10).
DePaul feasted on 24 giveaways from the Highlanders by outscoring UC Riverside
37-7 on points off turnovers.
