Don’t do it Broncos fans. Resist your urge to hit the panic button. Maybe it’s just me but I think the glass is still half-full.
I know that goes against your nature, but all you have to do is reflect on recent history.
Last season the Broncos went down to Miami and got thumped by an average Dolphins team in week one. Widespread panic ensued, and 15 games later the Broncos were AFC West champs finishing up 13-3.
You see that’s the problem with season openers. Way too much is made of the opener. Since fans only have 60 minutes of work in which to base their opinions, to much gets made of a week one loss.
If the Broncos had laid an egg in week eight, but were 6-1 up to that point fans would write it off as a bad week and move on. They can’t do that with the opener.
So now we have to sit through an entire week of dread and doom. Well, I’m here to tell you don’t waste your time. Stop ignoring your wife, and apologize for being a grump to the kids. The Broncos are going to be just fine.
Here’s how I know –
Despite popular opinion, Jake Plummer is not that bad. He’s not great, but he’s definitely not that bad. In fact, Jake’s ability rests somewhere between great and god awful. I know that doesn’t make you feel any better, but he’s good enough to get you to the AFC Championship game. That much we know.
We also know that Jay Cutler is not the answer. Sorry to disappoint the Cutler contingent blowing up the airwaves on sports talk radio, but the guy’s not ready. Even he admits to that. Eventually he will be. But not yet.
So your only hope rests with Plummer. Get used to it.
(A quick sidebar. I remember interviewing John Elway about his career, and the one thing he pointed out was the difference between preseason and regular season football. For those of you who don’t remember, Elway had an impressive preseason his rookie year, and then struggled once the regular season kicked off. A lesson for those of you calling for Cutler.)
Back to the here and now. It’s not like the rest of the offense was lighting it up. When’s the last time you saw the Broncos offensive line dominated like that? Not too often. I also know that’s not likely to happen this week against Kansas City.
When it’s all said and done the Broncos offense was terrible, but the defense was great. I actually think they’re ahead of last year when the offense and defense was terrible in Miami.
But maybe that’s just me looking at the glass half-full again.
