Good news for the Rockies. Coming off a stretch where they've lost 11 of 13 they only trail the first place Padres by 4 1/2 games.
But don't look for Dan O'Dowd to sacrifice the future to make a run at the division this year. Patience is still the key word for Rockies fans. As painful as that is to hear, the Rockies are going to be much better if they accept the fact that they're still a year or two away from being serious contenders.
Hang on to the talent down on the farm, and continue to develop the guys you've got on the major league level, and one day soon we'll be talking about the Rockies winning the National League rather than the National League West.
Encouraging news out of Las Vegas. Word is our very own Carmelo Anthony has been the best player on the court for team USA. 'Melo reported in the best shape of his life and is reportedly a lock to be on the 12-man roster.
Concerns about 'Melo's motivation after signing his $80 million deal appear unfounded.
A successful campaign for Carmelo over at the World Championships could propel him from 'very good' NBA player to superstar status. The Nuggets can only hope.
Speaking of the Nuggets. They pulled off a steal last week getting 20-year old J.R. Smith. The Nuggets picked up a kid who has the ability to be in their starting lineup come November, and all they had to give up was Howard Eisley and two second round picks.
Now the bad news. All they had to give up was Eisley and two second round picks. What is it about J.R. the Hornets and Bulls know that we don't? In my opinion it doesn't matter. If it doesn't work out all you gave up was a guy who wasn't going to be on your roster and two future guys who were not going to be on your roster. A can't lose deal for the Nuggets.
Broncos report to camp this week begging the question - how can you miss somebody if they never go away?
Lots more on them when camp starts.
