The Broncos are lucky they don’t play under the college football system.
In college football, how you win is more important than actually winning. You have to win with style in the college ranks. You just can’t win in college and contend for the national championship, you have to dominate.
If the Broncos were a college team they would be ranked 15th looking at playing on Christmas Eve in the GMC/McDonald’s/Armed Services Bowl.
That’s why I love the NFL. Winning the game is enough. The Broncos can beat the Raiders 17-13 in an ugly game and they don’t have to worry about losing their place atop the AFC West.
In fact, five of the Broncos seven wins have been ugly. Kansas City, Baltimore, Oakland, Cleveland, and Oakland again.
You know what ugly gets you in the NFL?
7-2.
That’s it. You are what you are in the NFL.
The fans and the media can gripe about Jake Plummer’s penchant for throwing interceptions, or a lack of offense in general, but it doesn’t matter. Winning pretty is not part of the equation.
Remember the 2000 Baltimore Ravens?
You want to talk about ugly. Their defense dominated, while their offense did just enough to win. I mean Trent Dilfer was their quarterback. Great guy, but Super Bowl quarterback? C’mon.
So Broncos’ fans can relax. Next time you’re watching the game, bored out of your mind, wondering when the next Plummer pick is coming take a look at the scoreboard.
That’s the only thing that matters in the NFL.
