What a crazy sports weekend in Denver! I don't even know where to start.
The Broncos draft their quarterback of the future, and a guy named Elvis. The 7th seeded Avs knocked out the 2nd seeded Stars (both literally and figuratively -- just ask Mike Modano). The Nuggets playoff meltdown continues. The Rockies end the month of April in first place. Let me repeat that -- the Rockies end the month of April in first place. And just for good measure, the Mammoth, Crush, and Rapids were all in action at some point.
So I'll start at the top and work my way down.
Anytime the Broncos do anything concerning the guy who lines up under center it's big news. So it's no surprise a number of eyebrows were raised when the Broncos moved up to take Vanderbilt QB Jay Cutler.
We know one thing -- it definitely got Jake Plummer's attention.
But does Jake have anything to worry about? Not yet. Cutler needs time to come in and digest the Broncos extensive playbook. It took Jake three years to understand the complicated schemes Mike Shanahan has devised over the years. A guy straight out of college sure isn't going to be able to do it.
So that gives Plummer some time. At least two years, and by that time both parties might agree it's time to part ways.
Meanwhile, the Broncos solidified the most important position on the field for the foreseeable future. For that they need to be applauded even if it hurts someone's feelings.
To the Avs. Alright, I admit it. I was a doubter as they went into their playoff series with the Stars. Losing their last three on the road with questions unanswered about their goaltender situation did nothing to ease my pessimistic attitude. But the Avs did what the Avs do and that's win in the playoffs.
The defense was great. Jose Theodore was great when he needed to be, and the offense, which has been strong all season long, was outstanding.
Bring on the Red Wings!
The Nuggets, on the other hand, are doing what they do. They lose in the playoffs -- badly. Reggie Evans taking things to a new level the other night cheap shotting Clippers center Chris Kaman.
The Nuggets win ugly. The Nuggets lose ugly.
The good news - it will be over Monday night. Then the fun begins. Make sure you wave to Kiki and Kenyon as they head out of town.
Back to the good news, and if you haven't watched the Rockies this season you should. They're a bunch of young guys busting it to make a name for themselves in the major leagues. Hey, they're 5-2 on this road trip without their best player.
Right now, May 1st 2006, the Rockies sit on top of the National League West. I know, I know! You're thinking to yourself that it's way to early to get excited. I agree, but after the past couple of seasons I'll take what I can get.
Just some quick thoughts on some of the other happenings this weekend. I received an e-mail from Machelle in Loveland wondering why I never write about the Mammoth.
Hey, I've got nothing against the Mammoth. In fact, congratulations are in order. With their win Saturday they advance to the championship game May 13th.
I do, however, have a problem supporting their product. My question to Machelle and other lacrosse fans just like her across the state is why can't the game be enough? Every time I go to a Mammoth game it's like going to a circus with a lacrosse game thrown in the middle.
Lacrosse is a great sport, and it can stand on it's own merits without some of the bonehead promotion the NLL employs. I don't need a guy screaming at the top of his lungs the entire game. I don't need music blaring the entire game. Just let the game speak for itself.
