ROCKIES NLDS ROSTERPHILADELPHIA - Colorado Rockies manager Jim Tracy announced Tuesday the team would have to take on the Philadelphia Phillies without their winningest regular season pitcher, Jorge De La Rosa.
"Jorge is not going to be part of the Division Series," Tracy said at a news conference on Tuesday. "As a matter of fact, our medical people had been working with him, working on him I should say, over the last couple of days, and his groin is about the same as it was when we had to remove him from the game Saturday night in Los Angeles. He was scheduled to throw a bullpen today. We're not even going to take that chance. We're not going to have him do that. We're going to continue working with him."
Ubaldo Jimenez gets the start in Game 1 against Cliff Lee of the Phillies. Jimenez called the Game 1 start an honor.
"Yeah, it's an honor, yeah. But the thing is, any of our pitchers could be starting opening day because everybody has the talent, have made the job to earn that," Jimenez said. "It just matters I threw four days ago, so that's why I was there. So I'll take it."
Jimenez said he would be prepared for a raucous Philadelphia crowd.
"I'm ready. I was here before. I was here in 2007 in the postseason. Even when we came here this year, even in the regular season, this place got nuts. The fans, they love baseball so much here," Jimenez said. "They're going to be there for the team, rooting since like the first pitch. But I'm prepared for it. I'm just going to go out there and just focus on the hitter. I know they love this game here, and they're going to be on us all day. But I'm ready for it."
Opening Day starter Aaron Cook will start Game 2 against Cole Hammels.
Jason Hammel gets the call in Game 3, according to Tracy, because of the way he's pitched recently. Over the last month, Hammel has a 2-1 record with a 4.01 earned run average. Hammel gets the call over All-Star Jason Marquis, who over the last month has a 1-3 record with a 5.61 earned run average.
"You can't ignore what you've been looking at over the course of a period of time, and I think it's very safe to say that Jason Hammel has stepped up and has pitched extremely well during the course of the second half of the season," Tracy said. "As a matter of fact, he's come on like gang busters."
Tracy says Marquis will be available out of the bullpen for the first three games of the series. The Rockies manager added that he couldn't ignore the way Hammel had pitched in the second half of the season, or it would be "doing ourselves a disservice."
De La Rosa led the Rockies in victories in 2009 with 16 and the Rockies were hopeful he would be able to neutralize the Phillies abundant left-handed bats.
"The lineup is a big challenge," Jimenez said. "Anybody in that lineup can hurt you, from the front runners to the eighth hitter."
Tracy says he's hopeful De La Rosa will be back in 2009 if the Rockies can advance.
"We are in a position, I really believe, that if we're fortunate to advance beyond here, could he end up in the mix and be a guy that could be considered for a League Championship Series if we're fortunate enough to get there? I think that's definitely a viable possibility," Tracy said. "But he doesn't have any chance to pitch during the course of the Division Series."
