DENVER - ESPN columnist Rick Reilly swallowed his words - and perhaps a few germs on Tuesday - as he made good on a bold proclamation he made back in April.
Reilly, a resident of Denver, said on KOA radio he would "tongue bathe the Capitol dome if the Rockies make the playoffs."
The Rockies held up their end of the bargain and Reilly did too - but only for a second or two - as he leaned out of a window and gave the golden dome a quick lick.
Gov. Bill Ritter could be seen in the background making sure Reilly didn't tumble out the window.
The mayoral bet
No matter who wins the National League Division Series between the Colorado Rockies and the Philadelphia Phillies, the homeless will win too.
If Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper wins, Denver's Road Home will receive a $1,000 donation from Comcast, a $500 donation from First Bank and a $500 donation from Citizen Bank.
On the other hand, if Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter wins the bet, Project H.O.M.E. in Philadelphia will win the same prize.
Hickenlooper says "when" then Rockies win, Denver's Road Home plans to use the $2,000 to buy Thanksgiving Day meals and clothing for homeless families.
"We all know the cheesesteaks in Philadelphia are good - almost as good as buffalo burgers made in Denver," Hickenlooper stated in a news release on Tuesday. "We also know a growing number of families in Denver and Philadelphia are struggling to make ends meet. So we are pleased to partner with Mayor Nutter to make sure homeless families in either city benefit from our wager. We are grateful to Comcast, FirstBank and Citizens Bank for helping us support the homeless and for joining us in cheering on the Rockies."
The 'Purple Punisher'
Metromix is getting Rockies fever as well, introducing a new drink called "the Purple Punisher."
