AURORA - When the Colorado Rockies made it into the playoffs, Connie Marker was excited. She's a longtime Rockies fan. So is her parrot, she says.
This, we had to see.
When a 9NEWS crew arrived at her home in Aurora, the 9-year-old African Grey Parrot named Casino was calmly on its perch. With lights on and camera rolling, Marker worked to get him to demonstrate his many tricks.
"Are you gonna dance for me? That's a good birdie," Marker said as the parrot obliged by nodding its head up and down.
"He's got a vocabulary of about 280 words," Marker said.
Some of those words he supposedly uses to cheer on his favorite baseball team. Casino has his own baseball in his cage and a giant Colorado Rockies banner just above it.
"Tell Mama about the Rockies," Marker said gently to the bird. "Make Mama proud. Tell me about the Rockies," she continued to plead. But Casino remained silent.
He preferred to slide down his perch and peck at a dangling toy.
Marker tried a little sweet talking to convince the bird. She kissed his head and cuddled him in her arms.
"Such a good birdie," she cooed gently. "Gonna snuggle my little birdie."
The parrot didn't seem to mind the affection, but still wasn't interested in talking. Maybe this parrot needed some parental lecturing.
"It's time to quit messing around, OK? Do what Mama says," Marker said. "These people came all the way to see you to cheer on the Rockies. Casino?"
Maybe this bird would respond to someone else. Even after 9NEWS' reporter and photographer tried to get Casino to talk about the Rockies, their attempts were met with further silence.
The parrot nipped at the reporter's hand when she tried to hold him. It stared contemptuously at the photographer who then made his attempt at conversation from several feet away.
Maybe Casino wanted even more space. Marker and the 9NEWS crew decided to leave the room. As they hid in the kitchen, Casino was suddenly lonely.
"Hello?" squawked the bird. "What's crackin'?"
Finally, Casino had something to say. Lots to say. He imitated a ringing phone. He imitated the dogs. He imitated Marker.
"Yes, Mama loves you," he said in his nasal parrot voice.
Still, he refused to talk baseball.
"What about the Rockies? What about: 'Woo woo?'" Marker asked the bird one last time with a disappointed sigh.
The 9NEWS crew was never able to see for themselves if Casino was really a Rockies fan, but they decided they were willing settle for the evidence Marker presented to them on videotape.
On the tape, an African Grey Parrot sitting on in what appears to be the same stick perch in the same wallpapered living room opens its beak while a parrot-like voice says "Rockies Rule!"
"For reals," Marker said.
