DENVER - Even though all tickets to game 3 of the National League Division Series between the Colorado Rockies and Philadelphia Phillies are listed as sold out, Max Deale says no event is truly sold out.
"I think that sold out is the biggest marketing scam of all time," he said.
Deale is a self-proclaimed "Ticket Jedi." He says he's been going to "sold out" games and concerts in Los Angeles for more than 20 years.
"I call it the game within the game," he said.
There are a few tricks he's learned along the way. The first is to have no fear.
"Know that you're going to get in and that everything is going to be fine, and just proceed as if it's already happened, and you'll be fine," Deale said.
He recommends going online at the last minute.
"I would suggest waiting until the day of the game, and then going on Craigslist a few hours before," he said.
But he warns not to just buy tickets from anyone.
"I always make sure that the tickets are from season ticket holders and that they're actually given, they're actually delivered to me through the actual team's Web site, themselves, that's how I stay away from scams," he said.
He says you should stake out the box office on game day and don't be shy.
"People in Denver are so friendly that it's so easy to walk up and just ask if anyone happens to have extra tickets. There's no harm in asking," Deale said.
He says there's good reason to wait until the day before the event.
"That's when the buyers have the power. Up until that day, it's the sellers. You want to get it when you have the power," he said.
He says in this case, patience pays off.
Deale says he never buys tickets from scalpers, but if you do, he says you should wait until the game or show has already started. Then you'll get a much better deal.
He also says you should buy "hard" tickets - not a printout or an e-ticket.
