DENVER - Colorado Rockies manager Jim Tracy was named the 2009 Manager of the Year by Sporting News magazine on Wednesday.
"Jim was an integral part of the Rockies success this past season, and we are all very proud and happy for him to receive this accomplishment," Rockies Executive Vice President, General Manager Dan O'Dowd, stated in a news release announcing the honor.
Tracy led the Rockies to a 74-42 record, which was the second best in all of baseball from May 29 on, behind the New York Yankees. The mark was the best record in the National League over that time period and at one point included a run during which the Rockies won 17 of 18 games.
Los Angeles Angles manager Mike Scioscia won the same award in the American League. They were selected by a panel of 22 big league managers.
Tracy is the first Rockies skipper to win the award.
The Rockies were only the 16th team in big league history to make the playoffs after switching managers during the season. They finished with a franchise-record 92 wins.
Earlier this week, sources told our partners at The Denver Post that Tracy and O'Dowd are on the verge of signing contract extensions.
