San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - The San Jose Earthquakes have signed veteran defender Ramiro Corrales and forward Mike Fucito ahead of the start of the 2013 MLS season.

Corrales is the last remaining active player from the league's first season in 1996, and he will serve as a player-coach in 2013.

The 35-year-old ranks fifth in club history with 30 assists and is ninth in goals with 16.

"We're happy to keep Ramiro on the field because I think he still has a lot to offer. It's also a great opportunity for him to transition into a role on the technical staff as a player-coach," said Earthquakes general manager John Doyle.

The club also signed Fucito, who was acquired in January from the Portland Timbers in exchange for a second-round pick in this year's SuperDraft.

Fucito featured in 12 games for the Timbers last season and has scored three goals with two assists in his 36-game MLS career with Seattle, Montreal and Portland.

San Jose has also revealed that defender Steven Beitashour will miss the next 4-6 weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a sports hernia.

Beitashour started 33 of San Jose's 34 games last season, earning recognition as an MLS All Star.
