KUSA - For the first time in franchise history, the Colorado Rapids have the rookie of the year.

The MLS announced Monday that midfield Dillon Powers was named the best newcomer of the 2013 season. Powers, 22, ranked second on the team with five goals and six assists.

The Notre Dame grad beat out teammate Deshorn Brown, who finished second in the voting with his team-leading 10 goals. Brown, 22, played for the Jamaican national team this season in World Cup qualifiers.

"He and Deshorn pushed each other throughout the season and they should share this success," Rapids president Tim Hinchey said.

Powers was the 11th pick overall in the 2013 draft, and he started from the first game this season.
