Indian Wells, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Americans Victoria Duval and Bethanie
Mattek-Sands each lost in the first round of the $5.9 million BNP Paribas
Open tennis event at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
Duval took the first set from Russian Alisa Kleybanova, but couldn't take
advantage, with Kleybanova winning 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
Mattek-Sands was no match for Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, who made quick work
of the American 6-3, 7-5.
Czech Barbora Zahlavova Strycova got past American Vania King 6-0, 3-6, 6-2,
while Italian Francesca Schiavone took care of German Mona Barthel 3-6, 6-2,
6-2, and promising American wild card Taylor Townsend took out Italian Karin
Knapp 7-6 (7-1), 6-1.
Also advancing were China's Zheng Jie, Czech Karolina Pliskova, Canadian
Aleksandra Wozniak, Croat Donna Vekic, Romanian Monica Niculescu, American
Coco Vandeweghe, German Julia Gorges, Italian Camila Giorgi, Ukrainian Elina
Svitolina, Croat Ajla Tomljanovic, and Spaniard Maria Teresa Torro Flor.
This week's top seeds are Australian Open champ Li Na, Agnieszka Radwanska,
U.S. Open runner-up Victoria Azarenka, and French Open runner-up and
reigning Indian Wells titlist Maria Sharapova, who topped 2011 champion and
two-time Indian Wells runner-up Caroline Wozniacki in last year's finale.
Sharapova also won this event in 2006 and was the runner-up to Azarenka in
Li will open up her week against Zheng, while Sharapova will encounter Goerges
in the round of 64.
