BRECKENRIDGE - Falling temperatures and the end of summer bring good news for anyone looking for a job in the high country: Ski resorts in Colorado are now filling thousands of positions.
At the Breckenridge Administration Building, front desk attendant Janet Cox is sitting right in the middle of job central. Her phone is ringing constantly, and loads of people keep coming in looking for work.
"It's been pretty steady with people coming in, looking at jobs and applying," Cox said.
Just like leaves turning yellow, the busy pace of jobseekers arriving is a clear sign the ski season will begin soon. It's a time when Breckenridge Human Recourses Recruiter Mandy Webster says ski areas like Breckenridge start a hiring process to move from a small summer staff to a large winter workforce.
"We have about 300 employees in the summer, and it goes up to close to 2,000 employees in the winter," Webster said.
This season, things have changed a little in the ski area hiring world. In past years, ski areas had trouble hiring all the people they needed to cook, clean, run lifts and scan tickets, so they hired international workers on part-time visas, but that's not how things are being done this season.
With unemployment so high in the United States, resorts have a large and eager pool of workers from which to choose domestically. That also means the ski area jobs available are going fast.
"The positions are filling up very quickly. We had a great response to applications online," Webster said.
It might explain why Cox been working so hard.
"[We've had a] steady group through the door, a lot of interviews," Cox said.
To remind Cox she'll soon be having more fun at the office, she's put a wedding cake topper of a skier hitting the slopes on her desk.
"It's to remind us how wonderful it is here in the winter," Cox said.
